Yes, I Really Can Crochet!
Yes, I Really Can Crochet!
I was sitting around reminiscing recently and looking through old pictures when I came across several photos of things I crocheted for my grandchildren when they were babies. Seeing them again brought back so many memories, and I decided they deserved a place here on the blog—for posterity and, apparently, as photographic proof that yes, I really can crochet!
What sent me looking through all those old photos in the first place?
I recently submitted for an opportunity involving a new crochet book. As part of the application, I shared my social media pages and then realized something: if someone looked through my pages, they probably wouldn’t have any idea that I know how to crochet!
Most of what I share these days revolves around quilting and sewing because that’s where my creative interests have taken me. I haven’t crocheted anything in a long, long time. But just because we don’t do something every day doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten how to do it—or the years we spent learning and enjoying the craft.
Where My Crochet Story Began
I learned to crochet when I was only 19 years old. A wonderful lady named Teresa taught me, her daughter, and her daughter-in-law all at the same time. Sadly, Teresa is no longer with us, but I still think about her and the gift she gave me by teaching me something I would enjoy for so many years.
Of the three of us learning that day, I was the one who stuck with it.
My very first project was a granny square blanket. Looking back now, I really wish I still had it. I’m sure those first granny squares weren’t perfect, but there would be something pretty special about having that very first project all these years later.
Crochet eventually became something I did all the time. Over the years, I made baby booties, scarves, shawls, ornaments, blankets, and plenty of other projects. Some were made for my own family, while others were simply made because I enjoyed crocheting.
And then, as often happens with creative hobbies, my interests evolved.
Quilting and sewing eventually became the crafts I reached for most often. Crochet hooks were replaced by sewing machines, fabric, rulers, and rotary cutters. I still have all my crochet hooks—and even some yarn—but it has been quite a while since I’ve completed a crochet project.
That doesn’t mean crochet isn’t still part of my creative story.
Looking through these pictures reminded me just how many things I’ve made over the years and how many of them were made for people I love. The projects in these photos were made for my grandchildren when they were little, which makes them even more special to look back on now.
So, I’m giving these old crochet projects their own little corner of Sew Serenity Cottage.
And who knows? Maybe digging out all these pictures is exactly what I needed to make me pick up a crochet hook again someday.
For now, enjoy this little trip down memory lane—and my photographic proof that this quilter really does know her way around a crochet hook!

The shoes and hats were for my granddaughter, Madison, in 2013 and I kinda got carried away with all the shoes and hat sets.
The blanket was made in 2018 for my second granddaughter, Ryan.
