A Quilting Journey, One Scrap at a Time

If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that quilting leaves behind a whole lot more than beautiful quilts. It also leaves behind scraps—and apparently, I’ve been collecting quite a few of them!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time behind the scenes here at Sew Serenity Cottage, giving the website a much-needed refresh. Along with updating pages and organizing things, I created a new section called My Quilt Journey, where I’ve showcased 40 of the quilts I’ve made along the way.

Seeing all those quilts together was a wonderful reminder of just how much stitching I’ve done over the years. But it also made me realize something else. With that many quilts, I probably shouldn’t have been surprised by the amount of leftover fabric I’ve accumulated!

Getting Those Scraps Organized

Somewhere in the middle of all this website work, I decided it was time to tackle my growing collection of fabric scraps. My plan was simple: sort through everything, press what needed pressing, and cut the scraps into usable squares for future projects.

Sounds easy enough, right?

Well, what I thought would be a fairly quick project has turned into something much bigger than I ever anticipated!

I’ve been cutting and organizing my scraps into squares measuring 1½”, 2″, 2½”, 3″, 3½”, 4″, 4½”, 5″, and 6½”. Each size has its own place, and I’ve been gathering all those neatly cut squares together in one box.

There’s something satisfying about taking a pile of leftover fabric and turning it into perfectly usable pieces just waiting for another project.

Just When I Thought I Was Finished…

Of course, just when I thought I was finally getting caught up, I discovered another basket full of scraps!

Seriously, where do they all keep coming from?

I suppose when you’ve been quilting as long as I have, those little pieces of fabric have a way of finding their way into every basket, drawer, and corner of the sewing room.

I’ve already sorted through this latest discovery and pressed everything, so now all that’s left is to get these last few pieces cut into squares and added to the collection.

Every Scrap Has a Story

As I’ve been sorting through all these fabrics, I’ve recognized pieces from quilts I’ve made over the years. Some bring back memories of particular projects, while others make me wonder what in the world I was making when I used them!

But that’s part of what makes scrap quilting so much fun. Those little pieces that were once leftovers from one quilt have the opportunity to become something completely different.

I haven’t decided exactly what I’ll be making with all these squares just yet, but I love knowing that when inspiration strikes, I’ll have a nice collection of precut fabrics ready to go.

For now, I’ll keep sorting, pressing, and cutting until I finally get through the last of these scraps. Although, knowing me, there’s probably another basket hiding somewhere just waiting to be discovered!

Now I’m curious—what do you do with your leftover fabric scraps? Do you cut them into specific sizes, save them as they are, or just keep adding them to a basket until inspiration strikes?

I’d love to hear how you organize your scraps and what you’ve made with them!

Until next time, happy stitching!
